As founding members of Housing Matters, they built and opened the doors of the Rebele Family Shelter, which is named after them. Reb and his wife Pat cared deeply for our unhoused neighbors in Santa Cruz County. “Rowland “Reb” Rebele’s impact on Housing Matters and all of us who worked alongside him cannot be understated. We thought we’d finish with another letter, sent to us Thursday testifying to Rebele’s generous spirit and advocacy. “Such is the best and most economical way to address our homeless problem.” “Our government plus private sector donors (like churches) can fund such communities permanently, using portable 100-square-foot sleeping trailers surrounding common spaces. “The Association of Faith Communities in Santa Cruz County has been providing such services for many years with the help of many churches that provide meals, toilets, showers, sleeping mats and counseling on a regular basis for our homeless population … so that the folks who come out of that environment are ready to become responsible renters when permanent housing becomes available. His final letter was published last February, when he defended former Santa Cruz County Fair CEO Dave Kegebein, who had been fired over a failure to fully comply with financial reporting. He was also a frequent contributor to this page with Letters to the Editor on a variety of topics, including his support for building a recreational trail along the coastal rail tracks. “Members of an ‘Editorial Board’ as defined by the Sentinel, may bring important issues to the editor’s attention, but the final editorial word should rest with the editor.” After that term ended, Rebele continued to take an interest in the direction of the Sentinel Opinion page and Editorial Board, writing to us in 2018: “The job of an editor, as I have known and practiced it in 60 years of community journalism, is to distill the facts his or her reporters and columnists have uncovered in their reporting and commentary, combine it with the editor’s own research and shape a hard-hitting, fact-based, no-nonsense editorial policy the editor believes is in the best interests of the community at large. In 2009, Sentinel Editor Don Miller named Rebele as the first community member of the paper’s newly launched Editorial Board. I would always sense his presence,” she wrote. “I would always see (the Rebeles’) generous support at concerts or events I was attending. Rebele, who made his fortune running (and selling small community newspapers), moved to Aptos relatively later in life, in 1979, and quickly became both a benefactor to local nonprofits and arts and culture – and a huge figure in providing help for people experiencing homelessness.Īs former Santa Cruz Redevelopment Director Ceil Cirillo told us Thursday, Rowland Rebele and his wife, Pat Rebele, were from the start involved in helping the nonprofit community, through giving and volunteering. Rowland Rebele, who died Saturday at 93, came to stand for the very best things about this community.
